Over the years, Galactic has made a noticeable trend of evolving their sound from traditional New Orleans funk to incorporating more modern elements like electronica, fusion, jazz, and sampling, all mixed with top-notch production value. Into the Deep is no exception from this trend. Produced and arranged by saxohonist Ben Ellman and bassist Rob Mercurio, the album stays true to the band’s roots while incorporating contemporary touches. Tracks such as “Higher and Higher” specifically encapsulate this old-school-meets-new-school sound.

We Want The Funk! L4LM’s Top 10 Current Funk Acts

The band has always been celebrated for their rotating lineup of guest artists, and this album proves no different. A diverse roster of guest appearances includes Mavis Staples, Macy Gray, Ryan Montbleau, JJ Grey, Maggie Koerner, David Shaw and others. “We look for uniqueness and a quality that makes the people we collaborate with distinctively who they are,” notes Mercurio in a press release.

Galactic’s Into the Deep is a fresh, exciting album that combines elements of blues, electronica, soul, and of course, FUNK. Dance driven tracks like “Right On” ft. Charm Taylor will have you boogieing nonstop, while more experimental endeavors such as “Buck 77” and “Long Live the Borgne” will have you appreciating the production value and departure from traditional funk. The album’s title track ft. Macy Gray and “Today’s Blues” serve as solid reminders of the band’s soulful roots. The progressive funk band continues to wow audiences and raise the bar with every new release. With a heavy touring schedule (listed below) for this summer and fall, do yourself a favor and catch a show.
