Stereochrome, the newest EP from Brooklyn-based funk band Turkuaz, is a return to their roots in both form and content. Recorded at Brooklyn’s Galaxy Smith Studios on vintage gear and captured on 1/2 inch tape with analog production techniques, Stereochrome encapsulates that crisp, powerful energy reminiscent of the Motown era, while still keeping it relevant and funky. “We didn’t use a single piece of gear that was made after 1970”, says guitarist/vocalist David Brandwein.

Members Of Turkuaz, Lettuce, Snarky Puppy, Twiddle, Dopapod Announce NYC Show

This EP will keep you moving right from its first track. It opens with an all instrumental, ~ four minute piece called “The Fader” that is loaded with upbeat drum fills, guitar licks, and bass grooves that can only be compared to James Brown funk. The following track, “Tiptoe Through the Crypto”, brings the tempo down a bit, but still never lets up. Sammi Garett especially stands out on this track with her gripping vocals. Turkuaz vocal work provides their audience with an often overlooked and under-appreciated aspect of the jamband scene.

The third track of the EP, “It’s So Hard”, has more of a soul vibe rather than funk, but the excellent guitar-work really shines on this track and once again the powerful vocals remind this reviewer why Turkuaz continues to be one of the better acts amongst the scene. The EP wraps up with an exceptionally fun number called “Gettin’ a Little Closer”, a track that has actually been in the making since Turkuaz initially formed. This song is a real treat that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face with its funky grooves laid down by the excellent keyboard work of Chris Brouwers
