Gathering of the Vibes is fast approaching, and we couldn’t be more excited! With an incredibly stacked lineup featuring the likes of the String Cheese Incident, Warren Haynes, Wilco, Billy & The Kids and so many more, we decided to focus on some acts that might be a bit lower on the bill, yet no less deserving of your attention.
**Gathering of the Vibes takes place July 30-August 2 in Bridgeport, CT. Get tickets and more info here**
Turkuaz:
Always a fun time, Turkuaz’s shows are a guaranteed funk fest that will have you dancing from start to finish. With their impressive vocal work and even better instrumentals, this 9-piece band from Brooklyn will be guaranteed to blow you away. The chemistry between the members of the bands is very palpable and permeates throughout the audience. Over the years they have developed quite a loyal fan-base that will help keep the party going. This is one act you don’t want to miss!
Moon Hooch:
Consisting of only two sax players and a drummer, Moon Hooch will certainly blow you away (pun intended). These guys have one of the most unique approaches to music we have ever seen. Moon Hooch coined the term “cave music” to describe their unique sound: like house music, but more primitive and jagged and raw. Horn players Mike Wilbur and Wenzl McGowen do this by utilizing unique tonguing methods, or adding objects — cardboard or PVC tubes, traffic cones, whatever’s handy — to the bells of their horns to alter their sound. Teetering somewhere between jazz and metal, they’re anything but the norm. Do yourself a favor and check it out, we guarantee you that you will be impressed.
Hayley Jane and The Primates:
Hailing from the Northeast, Hayley Jane and The Primates have created some serious buzz amongst the jam community. With a genre that is hard to define, The Primates’ music draws inspiration from a variety of styles, including 60s/70s rock and pop, old musical theater, folk, blues, soul, reggae, psychedelic, funk, bluegrass, and country. Above all, their stage energy is incomparable and will certainly have the Vibe crowd asking for more. Be sure to check them out!
Oktopus:
Oktopus is the brand new side project of Jason Hann (String Cheese Incident) and Todd Stoops. Leaning more towards jamtronica, these two musicians will stupefy audiences with their electro-percussion and eclectic keyboard work. The audience should expect multi-layered rhythms, impetuous funk, and overall impressive musicianship. Expect tons of special guests for their big debut [more info].
The Nth Power:
The Nth Power will be the perfect late-late Saturday night set with their deeply soulful tunes, exploratory style and soothing vocals. With a combination of incredible, top-notch musicians, (Nikki Glaspie of Dumpstaphunk, Nate Edger of John Brown’s Body, Nick Cassarino of Jennifer Hartswick Band, and Weedie Braimah of Toubab Krewe), these guys wow audiences with their incredible interplay.
Strangefolk:
Reid Genauer’s band has captivated the VibeTribe for the last twenty years. Occasionally performing with Assembly of Dust at this festival, Reid will be joining his original band Strangefolk this year. Strangefolk is the perfect afternoon set for relaxing and enjoying the scene around you. Although you won’t be hearing many “Type II” jams from these guys, their smooth yet vibrant vocal and guitar work will have audience members asking for more. For Vibers getting there on Thursday, be sure to kick back and relax with these guys and start your weekend on a great note!
