Reed Krafft has quickly risen through the ranks of the modern electronic music scene with his beautiful brainchild, Dreamers Delight. Making his live performance debut incredibly successful at Electric Forest in June 2015, he has since worked with the likes of Gramatik, Vibe Street, Cosmic Quest, and Frameworks.

Combining the cultural influence from his worldly travels with his passion for soulful, intelligently produced melodies provides a world of spacey, yet concentrated, goodness. Reed’s diverse qualities can be felt through the musical extensions of his latest EP, Awake. We can expect a lot more from the young Santa-Barbara based producer, which is why we jumped on the opportunity to sit down and catch him before he flies away from the map.

[Dreamers Delight debut performance at Electric Forest 2015]

L4LM: Your first live performance as Dreamers Delight was at Electric Forest last June. That’s less than a year ago, and here we are today sitting at The Brooklyn Bowl where you are billed to play with Break Science and Marvel Years. What’s happened in the last 7 months?

Reed Krafft: A whole bunch of very good things. After Electric Forest, I released my first EP on Lowtemp Records, which is Gramatik‘s label. I had some really great support from them on that, which led me to go on a national tour with Vibe Street, Cosmic Quest, and Frameworks. We had ten stops and that was a really great experience for me, getting to dive into some new markets and play out some new stuff to new audiences. Since then, I’ve been working on some new tracks that will be released in the next upcoming moths.

L4LM: Explain the concept of Dreamers Delight. What does it mean?

RK: Dreamers Delight has always been an idea that I’ve had since I really even became interested in making music. It’s creating a world of both audio and visuals that go hand-in-hand to create an enhanced experience of surrealism and euphoria. I think that’s what a lot of my music kind of portrays, almost in a cinematic way where you have a lot of uplifting ethereal vibes. I’m translating a lot of that into some new visual work and also using visual pieces to help portray the feelings of different tracks.

L4LM: So you have a background in creating visual media, too?

RK: Yeah, I really got started doing photo and video work, which kind of led me to become more tech savvy. Once I was spending more time on my computer, my friend showed me Ableton and a couple other DAWs that were really powerful. Once I grasped the concepts, I became infatuated with creating new sounds and new vibes that I felt hadn’t really been put out there before.

L4LM: It’s all about the vibes. I know one of your main inspirations comes from traveling a lot. Tell me about some of your favorite destinations. Is there a certain time and place that has inspired you the most?

RK: Absolutely, I think a lot of my music-making is affected by my environment and where I am. I’ve been lucky enough to travel to Korea to work on music, I’ve also spent a lot of time in Costa Rica, plus traveling throughout the United States on tour with another artist doing visual work for him. Every place that I go to, I take in a new feeling or I set my emotions through that environment and that translates right into my music. Being fortunate enough to immerse myself in these different cultures really emphasizes different parts of my music.

L4LM: Is there a specific culture that has inspired the vibe you go for, or do you tend to portray the worldly mix?

RK: Definitely a worldly mix. It’s on the spot when I’m sitting down on my computer, or maybe I’ll be walking around the city and come up with these new ideas, then I do my best to translate that right into my music.

L4LM: What artists have been your main influences throughout your life?

RK: I’ve been influenced by a lot of people, but Gorillaz, Little Dragon, STS9, Boards of Canada, and M83 have all played really big roles in developing my style of music. The list goes on, but those are who I really jam out to.

L4LM: Awesome. So you performed for the first time last summer, when did you start producing your own music?

RK: Well, I started producing a little over two years ago. Leading up to my debut project, I was on the cusp of deciding just how serious I wanted to get with Dreamers Delight. That’s when I was able to connect with Dave [Haas] (manager) and Tripp [Grey] (agent) and they were able to help me get my momentum going and ever since then, it’s been all about the grind.

L4LM: It’s all about the grind. The vibes and the grind… Speaking of, you recently dropped your ‘Awake’ EP. Tell me about that.

RK: There are four tracks on the EP, “Around” which is an extended version from the original track I released earlier in the year, that caught the attention of some of the people that I work with now. “Olives” was also released as a single that Gramatik supported all the way, and it got a lot of great plays early on. Then there’s “Awake” which was a project that I’d been sitting on for almost a year, but I wasn’t really sure what to do with it. So I thought it go really well with the other tracks. “These Lies” being the finishing track that ties a lot of the feelings and emotions of the other tracks together. The collection came out really well and I’ve gained a lot of support on it, and I’m very fortunate for that.

The Newest Addition To Gramatik’s Lowtemp Label, Dreamers Delight, Premieres EP Exclusively On L4LM

L4LM: What’s next on the agenda? Any upcoming shows you’re excited about? New music?

RK: Well, we’ve got a really big announcement coming up that we are excited to share with everyone in the coming weeks. Along with that will be a few singles. I also have a remix of Framework’s “Carry On”, which I’m really excited to release on Loci Records, Emancipator‘s label. I have a lot of tracks I want to release, but for timing, it has to follow a schedule.

L4LM: How deep is your level of involvement when you release a track?

RK: I produce, master, mix everything myself. But my team helps direct marketing and releasing. For the most part, I have a pretty big hand on where and when I want to release tracks. I have a lot of creative control on the whole package. Every album art is my own work that I put together. Creating art that goes along with the music pieces is really what Dreamers Delight is all about – providing the visual with the audio piece to go hand-in-hand.

L4LM: Any wisdom you want to share with the world?

RK: Don’t be afraid to ask others for help, or to step foot in uncharted waters. It’s the best way to find out your creative sides. Getting outside your comfort zones is definitely one of the most important keys in creating something that is unique and well-thought out.

L4LM: Have you received a piece of advice that has helped you in your career?

RK: Stay hungry, stay humble.
