Though Phish began their first hiatus following the band’s October 7, 2000 at Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA, that didn’t stop various members of the band from getting their feet wet and playing live. 15 years ago tonight, Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio made his first post-hiatus appearance at a Medeski Martin & Wood show in Albany, NY at the Palace Theatre.

Being introduced as “Trey ‘Family Man’ Anastasio,” Big Red would join the ensemble that night featuring MMW, guitarist Oren Bloedow and percussionist Cyro Baptista for several tunes in the second set, including “Partido Alto,” “Start/Stop,” “Dracula” and “Swamp Road.” As the story goes, Anastasio also inquired to Baptista on this night if he would be interested in helping out on a future project, that project being the Trey Anastasio Band (TAB). Baptista would go on to play with TAB on several tours during the early 2000s and as most recently as 2012-2013.
