Today, April 15th marks the 25th anniversary of a very special Phil Lesh & Friends three-night run at The Warfield in San Francisco from April 15th-17th, 1999. The post-Grateful Dead band led by Lesh was still in its infancy at that time, but fans were eager to see and hear Phil back on stage following the death of Jerry Garcia less than four years earlier.
The lineup that joined Lesh that evening included Phish’s Trey Anastasio and Page McConnell, along with Bay Area guitarist Steve Kimock and drummer John Molo. These throwback shows are some of the first well-known collaborations to feature members of Phish and the Grateful Dead.
Together, the all-star lineup of Lesh, Anastasio, McConnell, Kimock, and Molo opened up the show with a 30+ minute version of “Viola Lee Blues” and kept the energy rolling with an amazing setlist filled with tunes from the Dead’s live canon. The band also played a number of Bob Dylan selections, including “Like A Rolling Stone” and “Mr. Tambourine Man”, as well as one Phish tune, “Wolfman’s Brother”.
