Within the wider jam sphere, few bands have captured the hearts of their fans like Dave Matthews Band and Phish. While there are many stylistic differences between the two, it’s no denying that the essence of each show is their musical offerings. With that in mind, it’s no surprise to learn that the two groups have collaborated many times over during their lengthy careers.

One of the most renowned cross-overs between the two groups came during the first Phish hiatus in 2001, when guitarist Trey Anastasio caught up with the DMB at the Pacific Bell Park in San Francisco, CA on May 19th, 2001. The current home of the San Francisco Giants baseball team was an excellent host for the DMB show, especially when the group welcomed Anastasio for a performance of their original “Lie In Our Graves.” The near-18 minute version is downright smokin’, including a particularly glorious interchange between Anastasio and violinist Boyd Tinsley.

Let’s take a moment and thank both the DMB and Phish for their continued musical efforts! Fifteen years later and both bands are still at it. Amazing.
