Tech mogul by day, rockstar by night, Roger McNamee might be one of the coolest guys we know. His passion for music persisted throughout his days as a Deadhead working in digital technology and even helped to form deep connections and relationships with everyone from Steve Jobs to Paul Allen. Now, he’s taken his thorough business background to the music sphere and rounded up a bunch of high-profile musicians to produce two successful nationally touring machines, Moonalice and Doobie Decibel System.

In-Depth With Roger McNamee, The Tech Investor Who Shaped The Music Business

Formed by Grammy-winning producer T-Bone Burnett (Elton John, Elvis Costello, O Brother, Where Art Thou?), Moonalice came in and changed the game. With a fresh perspective on music business, McNamee sought to revolutionize the industry for both the artist and the consumer. By using an expertise of social media platforms and integrating live broadcasts, the band seeks to make music a communal experience for everyone. With a sound that’s based in Americana and heavily laced with jam, Moonalice is accessible yet complex. An impressive roster of musicians form the band’s current lineup: McNamee, Barry Sless (Phil Lesh & Friends, David Nelson Band), Pete Sears (Rod Stewart, Jefferson Starship, Hot Tuna), and John Molo (Bruce Hornsby, Other Ones, Phil Lesh & Friends).

McNamee applied these principles when forming Doobie Decibel System with Jason Crosby just over a year ago. Crosby, a former member of Robert Randolph and the Family Band as well as Susan Tedeschi Band, has a huge repertoire of past collaborators that includes Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Carlos Santana, Pete Seeger, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen and Dave Matthews. The power pair, who met at Weir’s TRI Studios, use their Bay Area resources to spread their creative, innovative music, combining psychedelic originals with covers of 70s classics.

Both bands will be hitting the road this winter, and you don’t want to miss out. Consult their touring schedules below.
