Earlier this week, avid L4LMers may have noticed an article we briefly posted, which described a fight between soul singers Aretha Franklin and Patti LaBelle. Our readers astutely discovered the fictitious nature of the original article, prompting us to quickly redact the entry. However, this is far from the center of the story.

Let’s start from the beginning. On April 11th, News Nerd, a humor site, published an article claiming that Patti LaBelle had punched Aretha at a Women of Soul concert in Atlanta. They posted, “Franklin was quickly struck with a Mayweather style right and left and stumbled backwards, landing awkwardly.”

Now, it seems, Aretha is the one throwing punches. She’s filed a suit against the site, to the tune of 10 million dollars, stating that the story was neither presented as satire or humor. “It was presented as a serious news story intended to depict me in a slanderous and derogatory way – defamation of character.”

After the article came out, Aretha posted a statement denying the story and explaining that she wasn’t even in Atlanta on the alleged day it took place, instead she was celebrating her birthday in NYC.

The article garnered national attention, and has supposedly been edited since the controversy.
