As Rolling Stone reports, the area adjacent to the storefront of the Beastie Boys’ second album, Paul’s Boutique, will be painted with a mural dedicated to the group. The mural, which celebrates the 25th anniversary of the album, will be painted by artist Danielle Mastrion, and will be publicly displayed on the corner of Ludlow and Rivington in Manhattan.

The mural comes after failed plans by Beastie Boys fan LeRoy McCarthy, who petitioned city legislators to name the corner “Beastie Boys Square.” The board rejected his proposal in January, and prevented him from re-filing for five years. The chairwoman of the board, Gigi Li, explained that the Beastie boys had not contributed to the community for at least 15 years – a requirement of street renamings.

Taking his defeat in stride, McCarthy instead organized the mural. The painting will go up on the wall of Wolfnights, a sandwich shop that has since replaced the “Lee’s Sportswear” seen on the cover above. Painter Danielle Mastrion will begin her work at 11 AM, and will continue until she is finished. New Yorkers – go check it out!
