Did you know your love of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen was so academic? It turns out that a new course at Cambridge University examines the works of the two songwriters, studying their music, lyrics and poetry to better appreciate their contributions.

After winning the Nobel Prize for Literature last year, Dylan’s work as a songwriter has taken on something of a legendary status. Dylan has always been an outside contender for the prestigious award, but the decision to actually give it to him was unprecedented. It seems the new Nobel precedent has been picked up by Cambridge, who will soon be studying his work.

The course is led by novelist and literary professor Jem Poster and musicologist and guitarist Stephen Ferron, each analyzing a unique aspect of Dylan and Cohen’s works. Unfortunately, the course is more of a seminar class than a semester-long study, and will only meet for two days: January 28th and 29th, with each day devoted to a song crafter. There’s sure to be plenty to discuss with such prolific writers as the topic of study.
