Last night marked the opening of Los Muertos con Queso, a new destination event in Mexico featuring members of the Grateful Dead with The String Cheese Incident, Chris Robinson Brotherhood and Jackie Greene. It was the CRB who opened up the tropical festivities, playing a set before welcoming the featured act of the weekend.

“Los Muertos” – Spanish for The Dead – featured Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann with guitarist Bob Weir, backed by Tom Hamilton, Dave Schools and Jeff Chimenti. The band opened with “Uncle John’s Band” and kept close to the Dead’s prized catalog, as Bob Weir took most of the lead vocals but gave some songs to Tom Hamilton as well, like “China Cat Sunflower” and “Crazy Fingers.”

The show stayed close to the Dead’s prized catalog with one notable exception, as the group busted out a cover of the Allman Brothers’ “Mountain Jam” coming out of a drum solo in the second set. Presumably played for Butch Trucks, who passed away yesterday, the Allman Brothers instrumental jam out was well received for the grieving fans on the shores of the Riviera Maya. The set closed out with “Sugar Magnolia/Sunshine Daydream,” and the band encored with “Liberty” to cap a great performance.

Los Muertos con Queso resumes tonight, January 26th, with two sets from String Cheese and two from the Bob Weir & Bill Kreutzmann collective. See last night’s setlist below, as scribed by Bill Batson of FOJC, as well as a clip of “I Know You Rider” from the night.
