After months of anticipation, the Martin Scorsese produced Grateful Dead documentary Long Strange Trip will premiere at Sundance Film Festival tonight. For Dead fans however, the real trip was the impromptu performance at 140-person capacity venue The Spur in Park City, UT yesterday, hosted by the band’s legendary members Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart.

The trio held court in unusual format, rarely performing without the additional members that would round out a typical rock ensemble. “We just love to play, man,” said Kreutzmann, more than accounting for the unique lineup. According to Mashable, the band let loose with Little Feat’s “Easy To Slip” and played hits like “Loose Lucy” during their short set.

The three Grateful Dead members weren’t alone the whole time, however, as they welcomed guests like John Popper (on “West L.A. Fadeaway”) and actor Woody Harrelson (on vocals for “Heartbreak Hotel” and “Not Fade Away”). Other stars like Kevin Bacon, Laura Dern, and Fat Naxon were also in the audience. Not too shabby for some psychedelic rockers who dreamed a dream over 50 years ago.

For those itching to see the new Long Strange Trip documentary but can’t make it to Sundance, you’ll only have to wait until May. Amazon recently picked up the rights to stream the new film, and you can read more about that here.
