Bob Weir has recruited a number of indie artists for a new album of “cowboy songs”, as confirmed by Josh Ritter in a recent interview with NPR. The Royal City Band guitarist said he’s written songs for the project, and also confirmed that Josh Kaufman (Yellowbirds) will be involved.

Additionally, Weir mentioned the new album in an interview featured in Relix magazine. In it, Weir says “The idea came from Josh Kaufman and his circle of friends, particularly Josh Ritter. It’s, for the most part, all new songs. I’ve been working with Josh Ritter a fair bit on some ideas, and I’m going to also drag in (lyricists) John Barlow and Gerrit Graham as well.”

He continues, “It’s going to be a pretty eclectic group of musicians kicking into this project. I’ve done a few sessions recently with Joe Russo… We’re going to downplay the emphasis on the playing and play up the emphasis on the storytelling.” The article also mentions The National’s Scott Devendorf.

While no release date for the album has been set, we’re certainly hoping that this means we’ll see more of Weir on the road!
