On the final night of their fall tour proper, Dead & Company delivered one of their finest performances to date. After nearly 20 shows together, the newly-formed ensemble is really clicking, and firing on all cylinders. For fans of the band, it is truly a treat to witness.

If You Get Confused: The Futility Of Debating Trey Anastasio vs. John Mayer

The show was straight fire from cover to cover, opening with a free-form jam that settled into “Cassidy.” That twisted into “Loose Lucy,” which kept the bluesy groove going into “West LA Fadeaway.” Some folkier numbers followed in set one, including “Ramble On Rose” and “Tennessee Jed,” before guitarist John Mayer brought the set home with his strong vocals and guitarwork on the final three songs: “Sugaree,” “Deal” and “One More Saturday Night.”

If you thought set one was great, then the opening “Help > Slip > Franklin’s” must have sealed the deal. Again, the Dead & Company band cruised through each song to perfection, soaking in the Grateful Dead legacy. As if that trio wasn’t enough, a monster “Scarlet > Fire” followed, and lead the group into the “Drums/Space” segment.

Afterwards, Dead & Company threw it back to the band’s earlier days with versions of “Cryptical Envelopment > The Other One,” as well as covers of “Morning Dew” and “Turn On Your Lovelight.” The four songs, all featured in the Dead’s formative 1960’s years, were a welcomed way to end an incredible show.

The tour came to a close with a soulful moment, as the band and fans alike sang the lyrics of “Brokedown Palace,” to rock their souls. The song ended, leaving fans to their own devices.
