On Friday night, Primus continued their tour with a performance at The Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park. To end their show, the trio invited frequent collaborator and friend Dean Ween—also known as Mickey Melchiondo—of Ween fame to join them for their encore of “Southbound Pachyderm.” Ween, who was already in attendance of the performance, hopped on stage for this final number, shredding through the heavy, thirteen-minute show-closing jam.

The collaboration was a surprise though certainly not unprecedented. In the past, Les Claypool and Deaner have frequently traded sit-ins, with last year alone seeing Melchiondo guesting with The Claypool Lennon Delirium in August while Claypool joined The Dean Ween Group back in June. Outside of the realm of music, Claypool and Gene are also known for their long-standing friendship, including their love of fish (no “Ph”).
