Listen To Dopapod’s Dreamy New Tune, “Starfish”, Off Upcoming Album, ‘MEGAGEM’

In early SeptemberDopapod had surprising news for fans with the announcement of a new album and a large string of new tour dates ahead of an unexpected yearlong hiatus. Dopapod’s new album, MEGAGEM, is due out on October 27th, marking the band’s fifth studio release. In promotion of this latest studio effort, Dopapod will be touring across the country, with their fall tour kicking off on October 26th at Theater of Living Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and spanning through to New Year’s Eve—the group will ring in 2018 with a two-night run in the Northeast starting on December 30th at the Fete Ballroom in Providence, Rhode Island, and finishing up on December 31st at Paradise in the band’s hometown of Boston, Massachusetts.

Dopapod’s hiatus struck many fans by surprise. In the recent weeks since the announcement, the band has clarified the motivations behind their yearlong break, noting that the sabbatical was inspired by the TED Talk, “The Power of Time Off.” After seven years as road dogs, the idea of a break resonated with the members of the band, feeling that the year off would help sustain the longevity of the project and allow its members to focus on self-care.

As keyboardist and singer/songwriter Eli Winderman elaborated, “Every seven years this guy closes his design firm and everyone who works for the company works on their own projects for the year. When they come back, everyone is inspired and working with a newfound sense of excitement.” He continued, “It’s a balance, making sure that you have a well-rounded life. Otherwise, it’s just not enjoyable, and you’re only thinking about one thing or the other thing. One side of your life fuels the other side, and if you don’t have a personal life, you don’t have any gas in the tank, emotionally or spiritually, for the music to have any substance.”

However, Dopapod is all-systems-go right now ahead of the break, particularly as they look to the end of the month and beyond when MEGAGEM is released and the group’s extensive fall tour kicks off. Today, the group has released a brand-new track off their upcoming studio release, the album closer, “Starfish”, which Huffington Post premiered. The tune has a dreamy quality to it, opening to ethereal and sparse keys before this lightness is contrasted with the appearance of heavier, constant drums. As the tune unfolds, Winderman takes on vocal duties, with his voice simultaneously wistful and confident.

Lyrics to Dopapod’s “Starfish”

We take a stare into the dark
We’ll never find a better time to start
Something has to give a sign

Eventually our paths align
I know that there will come a time
When everything will all be fine
Don’t take me there don’t cut the line
Cause I’ll be there inside my mind
