Former Red Hot Chili Peppers’ guitarist John Frusciante has announced that he will no longer be releasing music to the public. Frusciante played with the RHCP for most of the years between 1988 to 2009, at which point he left the band permanently and focused on his solo career. Widely acclaimed as one of the greatest guitar players of his generation and of all time, he has also produced and/or recorded with Mars VoltaWu-Tang Clan, Johnny Cash, Glenn Hughes, George Clinton amongst others.

After leaving the RHCP, Frusciante began to experiment in the electronic and ambient music scene, releasing a handful of EPs. However, in an interview with the English Beat, Frusciante announced that he will no longer be releasing music for public consumption, stating that,

“At this point, I have no audience. I make tracks and I don’t finish them or send them to anybody, and consequently I get to live with the music. The music becomes the atmosphere that I’m living in. I either make really beautiful music that comes from classical, or I make music where the tempo is moving the whole time, and there’s no melodic or rhythmic center.”

Frusciante further explained that he made the decision to stop making music with an intention to release because it would stunt his ability to grow and learn. He says that he was also making music with no intention of releasing it back between 2008 to 2012 because, “Being an electronic musician meant I had to woodshed for a while, so I have a good few years worth of material from that period that’s never been released…”

The news of Frusciante’s departure from the music scene comes after the release of his track “After Below” on April 7, 2015, under the name Trickfinger. You can listen to the track below. It was also announced on May 8, 2015, that Frusciante’s wife, Nicole Turley from the band Swahili Blonde, has filed for divorce after four years together citing, irreconcilable differences.
