Known to the Zappa family as the Utility Muffin Research Kitchen, Frank Zappa‘s legendary recording facility and home in Los Angeles, CA will soon open their doors. The once private home is now a public exhibition entitled “Someplace Else Right Now,” after the Zappa original tune.

The exhibit is said to feature a lot of strange, mind-bending installments. “I chose artists who similarly push the boundaries in their genres, and all the works in the show are loosely tied to the concept of place, because this was Frank’s only working space. I thought a lot about the concept of place, place as a departure point,” explained one of the curators, Ashley Sands, to The Hollywood Reporter.

The show runs through March 2nd, and includes presentations on race, politics, and leadership, as well as gender-specific constructions and sexual symbols. It is the perfect housing for such a unique showing, as the home was constructed by Zappa as a sanctuary for creative expression and artistic freedom. “The people who have come through are friends of the family, other musicians, contemporaries, scientists, artists, real free-thinkers. It’s a special place,” said Zappa’s son, Ahmet Zappa, who grew up in the home.

Proud of the extensions of his father’s musical mission, he continues, “There is a direct correlation to this place and the art that is up now…Standing up for what you believe in and having a passion and going for it.” Ahmet’s father passed away in the house in 1993, and his mother Gail in October of last year, so the sentimental values left in the cornerstones of the house are important to both him and his wife Shana. He starts, “We appreciate that it’s all the same reference, and whether that is divine intervention or … ,” she chimes in, “Or Gail and Frank doing a little magic from above.”
