This past weekend, George Porter Jr. and his FUNKY Meters project played a short run closing in Southern Florida. Regular keyboardist Art Neville was unfortunately under the weather, but it opened a window for the one and only John Medeski to join in on the fun and add his inimitable keys and organ skills to the mix. Medeski has performed a few shows with Porter as rotating member of the Foundations of Funk project, so it makes perfect sense that the iconic bass player would turn to the renowned organist to fill the gap in his band.

During last night’s final show of the run, which took place at BAM! Beer and Music Backyard Festival at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center in Miami, FL, the band showcased the music of The Meters while harnessing the unique energy that Medeski brings to the table. They touched on some of the band’s most famous material, with “Africa” and “Cissy Strut” both making early appearances in the set. The band utilized segues to keep the music flowing throughout the set, and they only stopped playing once throughout the evening. The band brought things to a close with a funkified cover of “Voodoo Child” by Jimi Hendrix, and then encored with “Just Kissed My Baby” to finish up the evening.

Thankfully, taper extraordinaire CHeeSeHeaDPRoDuCTioNS was on hand to record the entire show, and it’s embedded below for your listening pleasure.
