Halloween weekend was marked with a number of outrageous celebrations across the country, as music fans know that live music is the best way to spend the holiday. While Phish delivered their Chilling, Thrilling set in Las Vegas, NV, a number of top jam bands put their takes on the holiday celebrations across the country.

YoungMule with Jackie Greene in Madison, WI

Fresh off of his final show with the Allman Brothers Band, Warren Haynes turned up the heat with Gov’t Mule at the Taft Theatre in Madison, WI. The band teamed with Jackie Greene for a night of Neil Young covers. All in all, the group played over two-dozen Neil Young covers throughout the second set and encore of their performance. moe. Call On Jen Hartswick, Natalie Cressman and Bill Payne For Big Lebowski Theme, Late Night in Las Vegas, NV

After Phish’s show, many fans hopped over to the newly opened Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas to see moe.’s late night post-Phish show. Fitting for a bowling alley, the band brought out a number of guests for a Big Lebowski themed performance. Joining moe were Natalie Cressman (trombone, vocals), Jennifer Hartswick (trumpet, vocals), and Bill Payne (keyboards, vocals), for a rousing performance. The show saw a number of debut covers from Moe, including Bob Dylan’s “Man In Me” and Kenny Rogers’ “Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In),” straight from the movie, and a show closing “All The Young Dudes” by Mott the Hoople. The band played a number of originals from their new album No Guts, No Glory as well.

String Cheese Incident Plays After-Life Covers Themed Set At Suwannee Hulaween in Live Oak, FL.

The String Cheese Incident spent the holiday weekend hosting their own festival, Suwannee Hulaween. The band took the festival theme of “the afterlife” and ran with it, playing a second set laden with thematically-appropriate covers. Highlights included The Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil,” Paul McCartney’s “Live and Let Die,” Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven,” Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” and the Ghostbusters Theme song! The smokin second set was only enhanced by a number of guests, including the Antibalas horns, Martin Perna – Baritone Sax, Flute Jas Walton – Tenor Jordan McLean – Trumpet Jeff Pierce – Trumpet, Trombone, as well as Rhonda Thomas and Tony White on vocals.

Widespread Panic Drops Debuts and Bust-Outs in Broomfield, CO

Decorating the stage as a mineshaft, Widespread Panic came in outrageous costumes to perform a high-energy Halloween set at the 1stBank Center in Broomfield, CO. With John Bell as an elf, David Schools as a miner and Jimmy Herring as a knight, WSP debuted covers of Neil Young’s “Heart Of Gold,” Funkadelic’s “Hit It & Quit It,” Led Zeppelin’s “D’Yer Maker,” and Cheech & Chong’s “Earache My Eye.” The band also played some long-lost tunes, including Black Sabbath’s “Sweet Leaf,” for the first time in almost 1,000 shows (996, to be exact). Wow!

Umphrey’s McGee Treats Boston To Cover Tune Mash-Ups

Mash-ups were the name of the game for Umphrey’s McGee’s Halloween performance at the House of Blues Boston on Halloween. After getting things started with a number of classic originals, before jumping into “Walk This Sweet Funk Emotion,” a mash-up of “Walk This Way” (Aerosmith), “Funk 49” (James & The Gang), and “Sweet Emotion” (Aerosmith). The second mash-up: “Give It To Me Mama Jama” was a medley of “She’s A Bad Mama Jama” (Carl Carlton) and “Give It To Me Baby” (Rick James). Later in the show, UM brought out “National Loser Anthem, Tonight,” with “National Anthem” (Radiohead), “Loser” (Beck) and “In The Air Tonight” (Genesis). The final mash-up was “Strangletage,” a mash-up of “Sabotage” (Beastie Boys) and “Stranglehold” (Ted Nugent).
