On October 30, 2002, the beloved Warren Zevon made his final public appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman, ultimately succumbing to lung cancer within a year of the performance. Now, as David Letterman ends his tenure as host of the program in less than a month, it’s only fitting that someone should take a moment to honor both Letterman’s and Zevon’s respective legacies in the entertainment industry.

Backed by only two other musicians, Jason Isbell performed a cover of Zevon’s “Mutineer.” Isbell recorded the cover on his new EP, Sea Songs. The heartfelt performance saw Isbell trading harmonies with his wife, Amanda Shires.
