New Orleans native Jon Batiste will soon begin the most exciting gig of his career, serving as Stephen Colbert’s bandleader on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, which kicks off September 8th. In a new interview with Katie Couric, Batiste talks about his natural banter with Colbert and how an appearance on the Colbert Report wound up turning into a job interview.

“We met on-screen at The Colbert Report in July,” he says during the conversation with Couric, held at the Blue Note. “That was the first time we knew there was an energy. I felt there was a very, very fun, kind of weird but awkward in a good way sort of an interview.
