When you’re Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant, you can pretty much do whatever you want. So, when you want to be on the inside of a running joke with Def Leppard, naturally the band isn’t going to say no.

During Def Leppard’s major Hysteria tour in 1987, the band’s stage design was rather technically involved. In order for them to make their grand entrance, they had to hide in a compartment under the stage before bursting onto the scene. Unfortunately for them, the hiding spot wasn’t well hidden at all, and fans could see the band lay in waiting.

Naturally they decided they would hide in equipment boxes, and use their roadies to cart them into position. Upon hearing this, Robert Plant needed to get in on the act.

In Phil Collen’s recent memoir, the Def Leppard member explains, “Everybody in Def Leppard is a huge Led Zeppelin fan. I kept thinking back to when I saw Zeppelin as a kid back in the mid-1970s, and couldn’t believe Robert Plant actually wanted to come to our show. But it got better… When he heard about the way we got wheeled out there every night, he got all excited and asked if he could be part of the clandestine operation that took place before the show.”

What a story!
