Jack Bruce, the legendary bassist from the power blues-rock trio Cream, has passed away at the age of 71. Bruce was an integral part to the success of Cream, and ultimately lived a long, full, musical life. As his family says, “the world of music will be a poorer place without him.”

Bruce formed Cream, alongside Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker, in 1966. The powerhouse trio created countless memorable tunes together, despite only being together from 1966-1968. No mention of the name Jack Bruce would be complete without the ringing riff of “Sunshine of Your Love,” played by Clapton, but written by Jack Bruce.

Aside from bass playing, Bruce was the writer and singer behind many other Cream memorable tracks, including “White Room” and “I Feel Free.”

After the heyday of Cream, Jack Bruce continued his foray into the music world. He played on Frank Zappa’s Apostrophe, Lou Reed’s Berlin, and released countless solo albums throughout the year. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, and reunited with Cream for that performance, as well as the famed reunion shows in 2005.

Cream drummer Ginger Baker posted the following message:

RIP Jack Bruce – your music will always live on. L4LM sends our best to Bruce’s loved ones during this difficult time.
