Woah. 90’s super group Temple of the Dog have announced their first ever tour dates! Featuring Mike McCready, Stone Gossard, and Jeff Ament from Pearl Jam and Chris Cornell and Matt Cameron from Soundgarden (Cameron also is the long-time touring drummer for PJ), the Seattle-based outfit is hitting the road in support of the 25th anniversary of their self-titled album, the only album they ever released.

Temple of the Dog formed after the death of Andrew Wood,  the lead singer from seminal grunge band Mother Love Bone. Chris Cornell was actually Wood’s roomate at the time of his passing, and asked the remaining members of Mother Love Bone to record two songs with him, written out of the grief he experienced after his friend’s untimely passing. Ament and Gossard were in MLB, and recruited a pre-Pearl Jam McCready and a pre-Soundgarden Cameron to join them in the studio. Pearl Jam was also being formed at this time, and front man Eddie Vedder sings backup vocals on a few tracks for the Temple of the Dog album, which eventually led to the classic Cornell / Veddar vocal duet on “Hunger Strike”, which ended up peaking at No. 4 on the Billboard charts as an unexpected hit single.

With a warm-up show at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia, PA, the band will then hit Madison Square Garden, followed by a three-date West Coast run from the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, in San Francisco, The Forum in Los Angeles, and a homecoming show at the tiny Paramount Theater in Seattle.

Lead singer Chris Cornell had this to say about the unlikely reunion:

“We wanted to do the one thing we never got to do…play shows and see what it feels like to be the band that we walked away from 25 years ago…Temple was about making an album simply for the joy of doing it. We weren’t concerned what anyone outside of our group of friends would think of it. It was the first and maybe only stress-free album that we all made. This is something no one has ever seen. We wanted to stop and recognize that we did this and pay homage.”

Rhythym guitar player Stone Gossard called the Temple of the Dog record:

“…the easiest and most beautiful record that we’ve ever been involved with.”
