The Grateful Dead movement continues, as Phil Lesh & Friends packed Central Park SummerStage on Wednesday night to a crowd of fans old and new. Following a Phil-filled weekend at LOCKN’ Music Festival— which saw the Grateful Dead bassist reunite with Bob Weir to recreate the seminal 1977 Grateful Dead album, Terrapin Station, perform an entire set with members of moe., and more–Lesh continued the stride with the Terrapin Family Band on a beautiful summer evening in the city. Jerry Garcia Band keyboardist Melvin Seals and frequent collaborator and vocalist Nicki Bluhm were also performing as special guests for the show’s entirety.

Phil Lesh Announces Halloween Show At The Cap With Nicki Bluhm And Robert Randolph

The first set took on the music of Jerry Garcia Band completely, which included famous covers of “Tangled Up In Blue,” “Señor,” “I Second That Emotion,” and “After Midnight” with keyboardist Melvin Seals adding even more specialty to the stage. The second set was pure Grateful Dead, playing through all the favorites, starting with “Shakedown Street,” moving through “Music Never Stopped” and “Estimated Prophet,” then included the Terrapin Family Band’s own original “Galilee,” before continuing on the Grateful Dead set. A monstrous “Dark Star > Morning Dew > Dark Star” shifted gears before a set closing “St. Stephen” and “Love Light.” The band returned to the stage for a “Sugaree” encore.
