Scary news out of Turkey, as a record store in Istanbul was attacked while hosting a Radiohead event. While customers were at Velvet IndieUnderground to listen to some music and to celebrate the physical release of the Oxford band’s new album, A Moon Shaped Pool, a group of twenty or more men ambushed the store, armed with pipes and bottles as weapons. The men were apparently enraged that the store and it’s patrons were serving alcohol during the holiest Muslim holiday Ramadan.

Radiohead have released an official statement on the attack, saying:

“Our hearts go out to those attacked tonight at Velvet IndieGround in Istanbul,” the statement reads. “We hope that someday we will be able to look back on such acts of violent intolerance as things of the ancient past. For now, we can only offer our fans in Istanbul our love and support.”

While no one was seriously hurt, a few people were injured, including the man below, as posted by twitter user @DilaraGurcu:

Some video of the incident was recorded as well, as someone was streaming the event on Periscope when the attack happened. See the video below:

Apparently, the owner of the store signed on to reddit, and posted this about the incident

“i am the person that’s speaking in that video. i am the owner of that periscope account. they were determined to kill us. we were beaten by more than 20 men with pipes in their hands, beer bottles were broken on our heads, i don’t even know how we made it out. i will share the details later guys. just hoping that noone will die.”

This kind of violence is so horrible, and we hope everyone involved is ok and safe. For more information on this incident, refer to this post on reddit
