In a recent interview with The Telegraph, singer Robert Plant discussed his new band, The Sensational Shape Shifters and their recent release Lullaby and…The Ceaseless Roar, the demise of the front man, and even went so far as to nudge old bandmate and friend Jimmy Page in the direction of concentrating on making new music rather than worry about the next Led Zeppelin reunion.

On the demise of the frontman:

“There are only three or four frontmen left, from our time, who actually just kick the mic stand up and do it, and that’s me, Rod Stewart and Mick Jagger. But the only important thing is, can you contemporise your gift? Can I knock myself out, or am I just going through the motions? Because if I’m going through the motions, I’m f***ed.”

His thoughts on his latest musical endeavor with The Sensational Shape Shifters:

“It’s paradise to be on the middle of the stage between those guys….Is there anything new under the sun, or are all things just borne from the previous million ideas? What we’ve done is consolidate our strengths, they’ve gone into the cauldron, spun around and come out with absolute ease. I guess the only thing missing are the words hocus pocus.”

Jimmy Page needs to make new music:

“He should get on and do something, he’s a superb talent. That’s the sad thing for Jimmy, he knows that I’m his guy, I’m his pal, but the warmth that he needs to actually enjoy the world, it’s all there. Come on and give it to us.”

Plant’s comments with regards to Page shouldn’t be taken as a slight; if anything, it is just the opposite. Page is one of the greatest guitar players and songwriters in the history of rock n’ roll. There has got to be more in the tank for the 70-year old. While Plant’s solo endeavors since Led Zeppelin include several albums, Grammy nominations for his albums with Strange Sensation, a total of five Grammy Awards for the Raising Sand album with Alison Krauss, among other notable projects, Page  (while certainly not stagnant) has not exactly been pushing the envelope in the new and innovative category, instead choosing to concentrate on the reissue of the entire Led Zeppelin catalog. Regardless of who is doing what with their careers, the thought of a Led Zeppelin reunion tour would be more than welcome by the legions of fans across the world.
