While Bill Walton may be the most famous athlete/Deadhead, he certainly isn’t the only one. San Francisco Giants pitcher Jake Peavy was not only on hand for the two-night Santa Clara “Fare Thee Well” run in Santa Clara, CA, but he actually shelled out $15,000 to buy an event poster signed by the members performing in the band.

The poster was part of a charity auction orchestrated by HeadCount, the non-profit that focuses on voter registration. They have been tirelessly organizing a “Participation Row” benefit at all five “Fare Thee Well” performances, including numerous charity auctions and initiatives. The poster that Peavy bought was certainly a high-ticket item, but perhaps the most notable item in the auction is a signed guitar that Bob Weir used to play “Row Jimmy” during the Sunday show.

Headcount To Auction Off Grateful Dead-Signed Guitars

Charity aside, it is very interesting to discover that Peavy, a veteran of the MLB, is actually a Deadhead. Perhaps that has to do with Bob Weir and Phil Lesh singing the national anthem during a Giants playoff game last year? Whatever his inspiration, we’re tipping our hat to Peavy for supporting the Grateful Dead, as well as HeadCount.
