We all know that there are no boundaries with what Saturday Night Live will make fun of; this past weekend was EDM‘s turn. The skit comedy show decided to take some jabs at the current “Most Popular Thing Since Sliced Bread” trend that is dance music, and throw its artists and fans under the bus. Andy Samberg plays DJ “Davincii” (hmmmm, who could that be referencing?), who does everything except actually play music (well, he did press play) – from collecting bags of money, swiping fans credit cards for payments, playing Jenga, to even almost having a heart attack – all the while teasing eager fans of that ever-impending “Bass Drop.” Finally, the moment that the “This is the greatest day of my life” fans have been waiting for occurs, with “Davincii” pressing the bass drop button and Lil’ Jon so eloquently yelling “Get Turned Up To Death.” Fans can’t deal with the sensory overload and their heads begin to explode, as Samberg’s character levitates above the crowd with laser beams shooting out of his eyes.

We at L4LM love our dance music, however, there certainly is an exorbitant amount of button-pushers out there, that don’t really do much mixing while on the stage, all the while charging more than just a lot of money to see them play “live.” What SNL did was funny, will rub people the wrong way, but to a degree was poignant. There is some truth in stereotypes, and the show happened to point some of the EDM’s scene with this particular skit.

We aren’t saying that there aren’t serious producers out there, or fans that truly know the difference between a producer and your average button-pusher, but there certainly is a lot of new fans out there that aren’t particularly well-versed in the genre and the not-so-subtle differences between real DJ’s and the “press play” kind. Right now, and for the past 2-3 years, EDM is the hot ticket; this too shall pass, and things will go back to normal, where not just anybody with a laptop will be able to charge $75 for a ticket to one of their shows. The question is, what is the next music trend?
