Last night, Tedeschi Trucks Band returned to the Beacon Theatre for their 7th annual residency at the historic New York venue, laying out a stellar performance for the first of six shows. Since last month, fans of the group have been eagerly awaiting Tedeschi Trucks Band’s Beacon Theatre residency, as the band announced that the Beacon Theatre run would see the return of Kofi Burbridge—in June, the multi-instrumentalist was forced to have an emergency heart surgery and has been off the road and focused on recovery in the months since. During last night’s show, the band also had some special surprises prepared for the sold-out crowd, with the group inviting out both Carey Frank, Burbridge’s replacement on keys during his recovery, and John Medeski throughout the night to help out Burbridge on keys.

During their first night at the Beacon this year, Tedeschi Trucks Band offered up their traditional mix of originals and well-chosen covers, opening up the show with three recently released originals, “Laugh About It”, “Don’t Know What It Means”, and “Right On Time”, plus Derek & The Dominos’ “Anyday”. From there, the group invited up their first guest of the evening, keys player Carey Frank and Kofi Burbridge’s substitute, who joined the ensemble for a cover of Foghat’s “Chevrolet”.

After laying out renditions of the recently debuted original “All The World” and “Idle Wind” off 2013’s Made Up My Mind, Tedeschi Trucks Band then hit a cover of Tah Mahal’s “Sweet Mama Janisse” and another new tune, “Shame”, which was performed for the first time back in June. Covers of Bobby Bland’s “I Pity The Fool” and Derek Trucks Band’s “I Wish I Knew (How It Would Feel To Be Free)” came next before Tedeschi Trucks Band revealed their second and final surprise guest of the evening—legendary keyboardist John Medeski. Medeski joined the group for the final four songs of the band’s main set, helping out on renditions of Lee Dorsey’s “Get Out Of My Life Woman”, Medeski’s own instrumental track “Hudson” off his recently released album with Jack DeJohnette, John Scofield, and Larry Grenadier, Tedeschi Trucks Band’s “Let Me Get By”, and the traditional song “Will The Circle Be Unbroken”. To fully close out the evening, Tedeschi Trucks Band reemerged with an encore of Bob Dylan’s “Down Along The Cove” and the group’s own “Made Up Mind”.
