On Sunday, Umphrey’s McGee played their second of six nights this summer with Buffalo-based groove-rockers Aqueous opening the show at Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, NJ. The Stone Pony performance came on the heels of a memorable evening in New York City on Friday, during which Aqueous opened for Umphrey’s at Central Park SummerStage before heading downtown to the Highline Ballroom for their own headlining late-night play featuring help from UM guitarist Jake Cinninger and keyboardist Joel Cummins.

Aqueous began their opening set in New Jersey with a fake-out intro of “Warren In The Window” before opening in earnest with “Gordon’s Mule.” “Complex Pt. II” came next and saw the band stretch out for some skilled improv. Instead of returning to the song’s composed structure after the “Complex” jam, the band flowed right into the “Warren” that they bait-and-switched to start the show for an emphatic finish.

Umphrey’s took the stage for their two-set headlining performance with “Bathing Digits” > “Hurt Bird Bath,” followed by “Resolution” > “Uncle Wally.” Next up, the band broke out a cover of Ween‘s “Transdermal Celebration” for just their fourth time ever (and second time this year). The Ween tune set off a fantastic “Little Gift” > “Blue Echo” > “Mulche’s Odyssey” segment. Set two kicked off with a bust-out of their fan-favorite cover of Steely Dan‘s “Hey Nineteen” for the first time in two years. “Hey Nineteen” was followed by “Out Of Order” and “Padgett’s Profile” before a hard-rocking “Hajimemashite” > “Night Nurse” > “In The Kitchen” section and the first “Non-Compliance” of 2017 into “Bad Friday” to close out the set. The band returned for a “Syncopated Strangers” encore, which featured a callback jam to the second set-opening “Hey Nineteen” before returning to the “Syncopated Strangers” theme.
