Chicago-based jam rockers Umphrey’s McGee returned to their stomping grounds last night, hitting the Concord Music Hall for a late night North Coast Music Festival throwdown ahead of their festival performance tonight. UM was in rare form for the late night party, putting out a great set of their fluid rock and rollin’ jams.

The show started with “Bathing Digits,” then segued into “Rocker 2” to get things started. “In The Black” came next, before a great version of “Utopian Fir” into “Thin Air” melted faces in the venue. “Make It Right” > “JaJunk” closed out the first set in style.

After the second set’s opener of “Dump City” and “Partyin Peeps,” the band made a medley out of “Der Bluten Kat” and “Nemo” by weaving in and out of them. The “DBKt” featured “Push The Pig” in the middle, while “Nemo” sandwiched a great version of “Dear Lord” – a song that hadn’t been played since March of 2016. The big cover of the night came after the medley, when the band segued into Talking Heads’ “Making Flippy Floppy.” The song featured a great jam with Joel Cummins leading the melody, and the band closed out the show with “Hajimemashiste.” It was “Booth Love” that got the encore spot, sending Chicago fans home happy with one last proper rager.
