Umphrey’s McGee kicked off a highly anticipated three-night run at the historic First Avenue venue in Minneapolis, MN last night. Though plans for this run were on the books months ago, the shows have taken on even more significance in the wake of Prince’s passing. First Avenue was the site for most of the Purple Rain film, as Minneapolis was Prince’s hometown.

While Umphrey’s had recently performed their version of “When Doves Cry” shortly after Prince’s death, the band was not about to let the Purple One go unrecognized while performing in his hometown. The group opened the show with their debut of “Controversy,” the title track from Prince’s fourth studio album released in 1981. The funky number was a great choice from UM, celebrating the Purple One in style.

Watch it all go down below:

The show was full of classic UM jams, including “Bright Lights, Big City” and a potent “End of the Road > Cut The Cable” in set one. They brought out “Go To Hell,” “The Linear > Hajimemashite” and more in set two as well, gearing fans up for their style of high energy rock. A powerful “Phil’s Farm” closed the show.

The band is set to do it all again tomorrow night. Check out the full setlist below, courtesy of All Things Umphrey’s:
