On Saturday night, Umphrey’s McGee and Pigeons Playing Ping Pong headed to Indianapolis, IN’s Farm Bureau Insurance Lawn at White River State Park. The evening got started with a fun and funky opening set from Pigeons, who made the most of their shorter-than-normal hour-long slot. After a double-“time” opening sequence of “Burning Up My Time” > “Time To Ride,” the band delivered well-played versions of “Ocean Flows” and “Fun In Funk.” Finally, they closed with their go-to “Spacejam” > “The Hop” > “F.U.” medley.
Just after 7:45, Umphrey’s took the stage, starting with “Jekyll & Hyde” before moving into an extended”Phil’s Farm.” A “Wellwishers” > “No Diablo” pairing came next, followed by a well-played “North Route.” After taking the northbound path, the band played an appropriately juxtaposed (and impressively improvised) “Blue Echo” into “Red Tape,” before closing set one with “Wife Soup.”
The band took the stage with purpose for set two, delivering 15+ minutes of “Bridgeless” glory to begin a non-stop second frame. From there, the Umphrey’s flowed smoothly into a hard-rocking, jammed-out “Ocean Billy,” which eventually gave way to “Kimble.” Next up was FF, followed by a nearly 20-minute, hard-hitting rendition of “Draconian,” which finally relented into a “Bridgeless” reprise, bookending the set to the delight of the Indiana crowd. When the band returned for their encore, Brendan Bayliss sincerely thanked the thoroughly satisfied crowd, before sliding into and swinging “August” to send fans on their way.
