Levon Helm, the iconic drummer of The Band, frequented the farmland of upstate NY throughout his life. As Helm passed away in 2012, it’s no surprise that one county executive is pushing to rename a bridge in Hurley, NY as “The Levon Helm Bridge.”

According to County Executive Michael Hein, “This particular area, the farmland of Hurley, was close to his heart and he would visit often, sometimes with fellow musicians for an impromptu concert at Gill’s farmstand. He was an ambassador for our musical and cultural heritage and a tireless advocate for our farmers, farmland and open space.”

The report in the Daily Freeman continues to explain that Hein must convince the legislature that the Levon Helm Bridge would be a “fitting honor to a global musical icon for whom a special place is reserved in the heart of Ulster County.”

Helm’s wife is supportive of the idea, and looks forward to her grandchildren boasting with pride over their late-grandfather’s achievements.
