Beloved funk-poppers Vulfpeck returned to Brooklyn Bowl last night for the second night of their three-night residency, marking their third consecutive night playing in New York. Following their SummerStage debut on Wednesday night and the incredible Thursday night rocker, came another great set from Vulfpeck.

In addition to previous nights’ guests, idolized drummer Bernard Purdie, guitarist Cory Wong, keyboardist/vocalist/songwriter Joey Dosik, percussion master Richie Rodriguez, trombonist Melissa Gardiner, saxophonist Eddie Barbash, and vocal powerhouse Antwaun Stanley, the quartet welcomed vocalist Rachael Price of Lake Street Drive and drummer Louis Cato of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to the guest-filled variety show.

Complemented by the collection of songs the band normally pulls from, they performed “Barbara” and “Mean Girls”, both being borderline rarities from 2012’s Vollmilch, along with 2013’s “My First Car”.

Rachael Price lent her vocals to The Beatles‘ classic “Something”, alongside Bernard Purdie and Joey Dosik, into Aretha Franklin‘s “Rock Steady” with Melissa Gardiner. Louis Cato joined in for the Antwaun Stanley-sung “Wait For The Moment”, then stuck around for the Joe Dart “Beastly” special. It was, of course, another night for the books.

This week in particular, the band has continuously proven that they shine the brightest as a small venue act. Having gone through the festival slots this season for the first time, the band is quickly realizing that their fans would much more prefer to see them in an intimate setting. Additionally, it is when there are multiple players beyond the core four that Vulfpeck’s geniusness is truly most palpable. The nature of their tightly-knit, one-of-a-kind compositions are fully revealed when there are additional musicians contributing to them. The players that Vulfpeck have carefully selected to fill these roles have helped make this obvious over the last few days.

The best part of these multi-night residencies is the chance the band has to diversify their setlist and break free from the standardized versions of their songs. Away from the festival setting, the band has the time and ability to stretch out anything and everything. Of course we want the hits, “1612”, “Funky Duck”, and “Back Pocket”, but tonight, we all have our fingers crossed that the band will throw in some of their earlier releases, in toe-tapping 2011’s “Prom” and “Tomboy”, 2012’s “Adrienne & Adrianne”, or even 2013’s “Kuhlmilch 75 BPM”. In any event, we’ll be there.

Vulfpeck returns for their last night at the Brooklyn Bowl, with opening support from Joey Dosik. They head to Europe next week for a show in Dublin, then three nights at London’s Brooklyn Bowl.
