A Peace Corps teacher currently stationed in Ethiopia took a unique approach during his 9th grade students’ English lessons. Matt Westerberg, a lover of classic rock music, jokingly wrote the lyrics to Pearl Jam’s “Even Flow” on the chalkboard one day for the kids to learn. They got a kick out of it and asked to try it again the next day.

Westerberg told Alternative Nation that the daily routine turned out to be a huge confidence booster and really got the shy kids out of their shell. “Learning English is crucial here because it is a requirement to get into University and have career opportunities,” Westerberg explained.

The kids have since been begging to learn new tunes and Westerberg has so far introduced the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Metallica. Next, he plans to tackle the Foo Fighters.
