Last night, Bob Weir hosted a simulcast event at his TRI Studios in San Rafael, CA, with music performed by Slightly Stoopid throughout the night. Among the many highlights from the live webcast was a reggae-influenced cover of “Purple Rain,” with Weir joining the band on guitar.

Thanks to the band, we can share a two-minute segment from the performance below. Watch Weir and Stoopid take on this classic tune in memory of Prince:

They also played “Franklin’s Tower,” a classic from the Grateful Dead catalog. Dig it below:

The full live show is rebroadcasting on Qello Concerts until 10:30 pm ET tonight! Tune in here.

The band’s manager, Jon Phillips, shared some reflections from the performance:

We all woke up to shock and dismay on Thursday morning, as The Purple One had left the building. We were eating breakfast in the hotel nearby Bobby’s TRI studio, and everyone was recounting the incomparable effect Prince had as an artist. Some of us were kicking around the idea of perhaps what kind of a Prince song we could play later that night. Then my phone rings and its Weir’s manager, who tells me that Bobby wants to know if the guys (Stoopid) know any Prince in their repertoire.

So the idea took a more serious turn, and, although Slightly Stoopid had never covered Prince in their 20 year career, this was a moment in time to seize and pay respect to perhaps the greatest living artist of our modern times.

It didn’t hurt that Karl Denson (current saxophone player for the Rolling Stones and frequent Slightly Stoopid contributor since 2010) had recently been performing some Prince cover sets in 2015 and was familiar with a grip of material.

We also had the good fortune of Angelo Moore of FISHBONE slated as one of the special guests for the webcast, as Angelo might be one of the greatest front men and vocalists since FISHBONE hit the scene.

It really was special. The band met early, around 4:20 at TRI, to link with planned guests and Weir and to work up “Purple Rain”. Angelo took lead vocals. Denson took a gut wrenching sax solo and Slightly Stoopid’s Kyle MacDonald (bass), Miles Doughty (Guitar), and Ryan Moran (drums) held down a solid reggae styled rhythmic spin on the Prince classic. It honestly made most people, including myself, cry during rehearsal.

RIP Prince.
