Phil Lesh & Friends celebrated the birthday of extended Grateful Dead family member Stu Allen at Terrapin Crossroads last night. Featuring a lineup of Lesh, Allen, and Terrapin regulars Ross James, Scott Guberman and Alex Koford, the band would play one long set followed by an encore, including a number of early Dead staples like “Next Time You See Me,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Viola Lee Blues” as well as “St. Stephen.”

As an added bonus, Dave Matthews Band fiddle player Boyd Tinsley made an appearance with the Friends, marking his first playing with Lesh since the Backyard Blowout at TXR this past September. Other set highlights included an impressive solo from Allen during the Dead’s “West L.A. Fadeaway” as well as surprise covers of The Rolling Stones’ “Bitch” and The Band’s “Don’t Do It.”
