Last night at Hollywood’s Fonda Theatre, the surviving members of The Doors, guitar player Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore, gathered an all-star cast of musicians to celebrate the birthday of founding Doors’ keyboard player Ray Manzarek, who died of cancer in 2013. The performance marked the first occasion in 15 years that Krieger and Densmore performed together.

Featuring members of the Foo Fighters, Stone Temple Pilots, Jane’s Addiction, X, Gov’t Mule and Dead Sara, last night’s memorial included some of the Doors’ most treasured songs, including contributions from Warren Haynes on “When The Music’s Over,” “Wild Child,” and “Roadhouse Blues,” the Foo Fighers’ Taylor Hawkins singing “Alabama Song (Whisky Bar)” and “Love Me Two Times,” Emily Armstrong of Dead Sara on “Backdoor Man” and Andrew Watt of the band Miike Snow captivating the Fonda Theatre with his vocals on “L.A. Woman.”

Rami Jaffee of the Foo Fighters assumed Manzarek’s role on keyboards for most of the night, with other contributions coming from Stephen Perkins of Jane’s Addiction behind the kit, interchanging with Densmore throughout the night. In addition, Exene Cervenka and John Doe of X performed “Soul Kitchen” and their own tune “Nausea,” Cervenka finally exclaiming, “I was lucky to be a human being on he planet when the Doors were around.” “I think the Doors changed culture forever,” he said. It was Manzarek who produced the band’s first four albums and played organ on several tracks.

Fittingly, “Light My Fire” served as the Doors encore for the night. The first song Krieger ever wrote, he remarked that it “might be the most iconic Ray solo ever,” adding, “actually, the most iconic organ solo ever.”
