Umphrey’s McGee kicked off a highly anticipated three night run in Asheville, NC last night, performing alongsifde Greensky Bluegrass to open things up at the ExploreAsheville.com Arena. The show was marked by great playing from both bands, including some collaborations between each band to get the run started on the right foot.

Greensky Bluegrass played first, treating fans to their energetic take on the Americana genre. They opened up with “Windshield,” a fan favorite, before diving into a jammed out take on “Living Over.” The band even welcomed out UM keyboardist Joel Cummins during “In Control,” and would close out the set with the Bruce Springsteen classic, “Atlantic City.”

Umphrey’s McGee followed, leaving it all on the table for a great opening night performance. The band opened with a “Bathing Digits” > “Rocker part 2” combination, before jamming out classics like “Nothing Too Fancy” > “Spires” > “Upward.” They kept it flowing through the first set, ending the seven song offering with “Atmosfarag” and “Der Bluten Kat.”

The second set immediately got going with “40’s Theme,” before a big “Resolution” -> “Phil’s Farm” set the stage for one of the show’s highlight moments. After busting out Black Sabbath’s titular hit, “Black Sabbath,” Umphrey’s called on Anders Beck and Paul Hoffman from Greensky Bluegrass to join in for a take on the classic Sabbath tune, “War Pigs.” With Hoffman leading on vocals and Beck shredding on dobro, this was a great display of musicianship from both groups.

Umphrey’s would close out the set with “2×2” and “Nothing Too Fancy,” before closing out the night with an encore of “Bad Friday.” The two bands will continue their arena run tomorrow night, before Umphrey’s closes things out with a Sunday show at The Orange Peel.
