On Sunday night, October 16th, the Chris Robinson Brotherhood brought their music to Milwaukee’s Turner Hall Ballroom for a fun Sunday evening performance. It was a great show that demonstrated the Brotherhood’s ability to consistently bring good music to their audiences.
The first set was non-stop fun. Of course they played “Sunday Sound” in a nod to the evening. The song was quite extended and featured some great keyboard riffs from Adam “The Wizard” MacDougall. Other notable parts of the set included Robinson’s harmonica playing during “Down Home Girl.” When he began wailing on the little wind instrument, the crowd went crazy.
The second set was even more fun than the first. They played a couple newer tunes, like “New Cannonball Rag” and the very funky “Narcissus Soaking Wet” from newly-released Anyway You Love, We Know How You Feel to end the set. Between those songs, the band played a great rendition of Bob Dylan’s “It’s All Over Now Baby Blue.” The encore was a real treat. Not only was it three songs, but it included another Dylan cover in “Positively 4th Street,” as well as the debut rendition of The Byrds’ “Lazy Days”. The night ended with “Rabbit Fighter,” leaving all in attendance quite happy with the Brotherhood’s Sunday service.
The show was a great time and hopefully fans will be able to relisten to the show many more times. There were a couple tapers present, and the band regularly offers soundboards of their shows for fans to purchase. On the last few nights of their tour, the Brotherhood has brought along Betty Cantor-Jackson, of Grateful Dead taping fame, to help record the shows. We can only hope that she adds her special touch to the recording of this awesome show.
