Disclaimer: this is not a TBT, this actually happened, yesterday, in the year 2015.

16-year-old me was bursting with excitement (but pretending to be chill about it cause, you know, emo stuff) when I heard one of my favorite punk* bands of my teenage years, Death Cab for Cutie, was playing around the corner from me, at the Music Hall of Williamsburg.

*Actually really lovely, chill alt rock/indie music that mysteriously fell under the category of “punk” back in the day.

The band announced just a day prior to the show, yet tickets sold out almost instantly.

My initial thoughts were: Do they still got it going on? What will the crowd be like? Will they play the old stuff? Should I wear black skinny jeans and vans and write XXX on my hands with a sharpie?

The answer to my first inquiry is: FUCK yes! That band is on fire. Lead singer Ben Gibbard (also lead singer of the Postal Service) has that unique and passionate voice that still tugs at all the heart strings. They’re all a really talented bunch that rock harder than I remember.

Most importantly: They played ALL. THE. HITS. All of them. And I definitely screamed like a preteen at a Justin Bieber concert. They opened with “I Will Possess Your Heart” into “Crooked Teeth,” dropped “Soul Meets Body” into “Sound Of Settling,” encored with “I Will Follow You Into The Dark” and closed with “Transatlanticism.” RIP, 16-year-old me just died.

They played a few songs off their forthcoming album Kitsungi also, and fans should definitely get excited about this one (listen to the first single ‘Black Sun’ here). Though I refuse to acknowledge that they’ve made any new music since 2005’s Plans

Aside from his mesmerizing voice, Gibbard won the crowd over with a quip about Fox News spinning the “blizzard” to be Mayor Bill De Blasio’s fault.

Check out this set list and I dare you to not go Spotify your youth immediately. Videos below.
