With the season’s first snowfall blanketing the entire Midwest region in the soft white powder, Papadosio rolled into Grand Rapids, MI and performed a fantastic show. The Intersection was filled with concertgoers who all enjoyed a Sunday funday.

Throughout Thriftwerks’ opening DJ set, fans continued to pour into the venue. By the time Papadosio took the stage, the place was fairly packed. The opening, minor guitar chord of “Epiphany” echoed through the room, and it was a great way to begin the set.

Having released their newest CD Extras in a Movie over a month ago (Read the review here), the crowd was very familiar with this new song and did a good job of singing along. A long and exploratory “Magreenery” followed, one that went unfinished. The instrumental song really delved into some spacier jams, including a slower breakdown containing some great synthesizer work that was reminiscent of some of their funkier musical influences.

As deep as the improvisation was, it shouldn’t be surprising that they never made it back to the end of the song. Newer tunes “Wrong Nostalgia” and “We Can Always Come Back” followed. The latter has clearly become the biggest jam vehicle of the new album, as the piano ending of the song led to some quality improvisation.

They stopped the jamming on a dime and began playing “Hippie Babysitter,” which made for an interesting segue. “Hippie Babysitter” featured the best improv of the night, as the song contained a very blissful, euphoric, feel-good jam that reached a soaring peak. Simultaneous dancing and smiling were seen across the entire crowd.

For the next tune Papadosio brought out a guest, bass player Brennan Andes of the Macpodz, for a relatively rare sit-in on this Extras in a Movie tour. It was an interesting sit-in, because Papadosio’s bass player Rob McConell also stayed on stage as well, thus the song contained two bass players. The two played off each other in a very collaborative way, making it seem as if they never played apart from each other. They were clearly having a ton of fun, as both of them had huge smiles plastered on their faces. It was a really fun moment of the show.

They closed the show out with two more new songs, “Out of Hiding” and “Glimpse of Light,” and ended the night. The lower amount of songs played translated to a higher amount of improvisation, and tonight Papadosio lived up to the jamband moniker. No slowing down for Papadosio.
