The Werks rolled into Madison, WI for a stop on their ‘Inside a Dream’ tour, spanning almost the entirety of March and April. Despite what looks like a short set on paper, they absolutely raged. And there were no shortage of jams. The Werks know how to jam, and they displayed that last night in Madison.

The night started off with some local talent, including Sweet Delta Dawn and Ifdakar. The latter played a stellar cover of Talking Heads’ “Girlfriend is Better,” which you can watch below, courtesy of infinirock:

The Werks came on and opened with “Inside a Dream,” the title track off their 2015 release. The composed section didn’t last long, as they opened it up with an exceptionally good groove that lasted quite awhile. After finishing the improvisation, they began playing an acid jazz introduction that led into “Cloud Hopper.” This was another song that featured heavy improvisation, including an “In the Hall of the Mountain King” tease. The best part of the song was at the end, when guitarist Chris Houser led the band into a spirited “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” jam, one in which the guitar seemed to truly wail loudly throughout the venue. With the passing of Beatles producer George Martin earlier this week, this was a great tribute. Afterwards, Houser even mentioned, “A little tribute to George Martin there.”

An hour into the show, The Werks had only played two songs; that should tell you you the amount of jamming that was present. “Moetry in Potion” came next, which was short but had a soaring, uplifting, Jurassic Park-esque jam in it. Another song of the new album, “Find Your Way,” followed. It was a monster and featured some of the best jamming of the evening. They closed their set with an OG that was superb.

They came out and did a double encore featuring “Burning Groove” as well as the Hendrix classic “Bold As Love.” Houser’s guitar work was excellent, but perhaps his vocals stood out even more. With The Werks playing all over the country, it’s a great time to catch them when they come around your parts. They played an awesome show last night in Madison, and only more can be expected of them the rest of the tour.

Be sure to catch The Werks on the road throughout 2016, including their annual Werk Out Festival. Featuring the likes of STS9, Lettuce, Dopapod, Twiddle, The Motet and more. It all goes down August 4-6 in Thornville, OH, and more information about the festival can be found here.
