For the past seven years, The Humans of Phish has documented the rich, eccentric tapestry of the Phish fan community through portraits and stories from the people who make up this vibrant scene. Inspired by Humans of New York, the photojournalism project shifts the focus from a single city to a nomadic, music-loving community that follows its favorite band from venue to venue.

Launched in 2018 by Kylie Fitch, The Humans of Phish began as a passion project and has since evolved into both a beloved platform for storytelling and something of a digital gathering space within the jam band world. Fitch, who now works as an independent concert promoter and helps put on shows with The State Room Presents in Salt Lake City, has remained at the helm, capturing the heartfelt, hilarious, and sometimes magical experiences of fans across the country.

“The Humans of Phish is a project not unlike Humans of New York, although instead of capturing a demographic tied to geography, the vision is to genuinely capture our little community created from music,” Fitch explained in a post introducing the project. “Phish fans are vibrant, carefree, particular, and most certainly peculiar. Rarely a moment passes without sharing in a joke or a continuing ‘shtick.’ Each fan’s story is so unique, yet we all gather to celebrate in one powerfully uniting force.”

Following the Humans of New York model, each post features one or two portrait photos capturing the spirit of a particular Phish fan and pairs it with a quote from the person, sometimes detailing their history and relationship with the band and fan community, other times spotlighting a particular anecdote.

The charm of the page lies in its sincerity. Whether highlighting a fan’s first show, a story of personal transformation, or just a fun costume, each post serves as a reminder of what makes the Phish community so special.

Last summer, Fitch posted a call for collaborators to help grow the project—a testament to its expanding reach. In the meantime, The Humans of Phish has continued to flourish organically, with nearly 10,000 followers each on Instagram and Facebook.

Through every portrait, The Humans of Phish offers a snapshot of a world where individuality is celebrated, weirdness is welcome, and Phish provides the soundtrack.
