The line separating the jam band and indie worlds has become more permeable as of late, with the latest collision occurring on Friday as Dawes covered Goose at Utah’s Park City Song Summit with special guests Duane Betts, Eric Krasno, and Greensky BluegrassPaul Hoffman.

Betts, Krasno, and Hoffman each sat in on different songs throughout Dawes’ set. First, Hoffman joined in on “Quitter” and “All Your Favorite Bands”. Betts then added some Southern grit to The Allman Brothers Band‘s “Ramblin’ Man”, “My Girl to Me”, and “Somewhere Along the Way”. Finally, Krasno sat in on “Comes in Waves” and “When My Time Comes”. All three guests then helped close the set with a somewhat surprising cover of Goose fan favorite “Animal”.

Dawes frontman Taylor Goldsmith—who established his jam band pedigree playing with Phil Lesh and recently performed with Grahame Lesh & Friends at The Heart of Town in San Francisco—introduced the unexpected cover by explaining that it stemmed from a response Goose’s Peter Anspach gave in a recent interview.

“Our good friends in the band Goose—you might have heard of them—they were actually asked, ‘Who would you like to hear cover a Goose song?” he told the crowd. “Peter said, ‘I’d like to hear Dawes play a Goose song,’ and we let them know the challenge was accepted, and this is the moment, right now, with you guys right before they get here. They might even play the same song on this stage for all I know.”

Goose performed at the festival the following day, but the indie groove quartet—who just surprised fans with a brand new album on Wednesday—did not include “Animal” in its setlist.
