On Sunday night, after over 16 years away, a reunited Oasis returned to North America to kick off the next leg of its reunion tour to a sold-out crowd of 55,000 at Toronto, ON’s Rogers Stadium.
Noel Gallagher, Liam Gallagher, and the rest of the band just finished their U.K. reunion run, and the headlines have been overwhelmingly wholesome and lighthearted—unlike the volatile and chaotic storylines that followed the Manchester-native group throughout the ’90s and ’00s. One endearing trend on the tour, perpetuated via various viral crowd videos, has found fans recreating beloved Manchester City celebration dance “the Ponzan,” which involves the crowd turning their backs to the field, wrapping their arms around their neighbors, and jumping up and down.
A few songs into Oasis’ first of two Toronto shows, Liam challenged the Canadian crowd to carry the spirit of his beloved Man City across the pond. “I bumped into a geezer today about half seven in the morning called Hugo,” he explained. “He comes up to me and says, ‘Mr. Gallagher,’ and I said, ‘No need for that. It’s Liam.’ He says, ‘Good luck tonight trying to get these Canadians doing the Poznan.’ He says, ‘Cause they’re all a little bit shy. They’re a little bit scared and stuff. They all smoke pot now. They’re all f—ing out of their heads.’ He says, ‘Good luck with doing that s— tonight.’”
“So what, are we going to prove them wrong then or what?” Liam asked the Toronto audience as the crowd volume swelled. “You don’t want to be the first one letting this side down. … You lot turn around. Put your arms around each other. Give each other a cuddle, and just jump up and down. It’s very easy.” With that, the band launched into fan-favorite “Cigarettes & Alcohol”. The Canadians, in turn, Ponzan’d like Man City had just scored in the 90th minute.
“We showed Hugo,” Liam added when the song was finished. “We showed ‘im.”

Then, during “Stand By Me”, the skies above Rogers Stadium opened and began to dump wind and rain. A drenched Liam later introduced “Whatever” with apt flippancy about the weather as precipitation continued to pelt Toronto: “Don’t you just love it, a little bit of chaos when the weather comes? So f—ing good, innit? Twist your melons just a little bit, innit? All that sunshine, it’s not good for ya. Wind and sleet. Good for the soul.”
